Cinemagraphs are still photos that have been merged with video recordings to create a somewhat uncanny effect. When you look at these strangely eerie photos, your mind vacillates between two seemingly incompatible dimensions: frozen time frames in photography and live video. Cinemagraphs are typically created by taking a still photo, then taking video of the same location and merging the two in Photoshop, and then saving the file as a .GIF, a popular but nearly outdated (until cinemagraphs came along!) file format that auto-replays animations over and over and over.
